Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) Cell

The Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) Cell is a dedicated body established within the institution in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) Guidelines (January 2024), with the objective of ensuring equitable access to higher education and opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Cell aims to identify and address systemic barriers, promote inclusive participation, and extend comprehensive academic and institutional support to all students, irrespective of their socio-economic status or abilities. It strives to create an inclusive and enabling environment where every learner is empowered to succeed and no potential remains untapped.

Key Objectives of the SEDGs Cell

The Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) Cell is committed to fostering a safe, secure, and inclusive campus environment through the following objectives:

Objectives

  • To uphold and protect the constitutional rights, dignity, safety, and security of individuals belonging to SEDGs.
  • To ensure that the Higher Education Institution (HEI) remains an inclusive, safe, and supportive space for all SEDGs students.
  • To provide comprehensive socio-emotional and academic support through structured counselling, mentoring, and monitoring initiatives.
  • To facilitate the effective implementation of Government policies, including reservation provisions, welfare schemes, facilities, and guidelines for SEDGs students.
  • To design and implement targeted outreach programs that enhance access to educational opportunities for SEDGs students.
  • To ensure strict adherence to preventive measures and legal provisions addressing discrimination and atrocities.
  • To disseminate, promote, and monitor compliance with all UGC and Government guidelines related to SEDGs.
  • To ensure timely redressal of grievances and complaints of SEDGs students within 15 days through a formal Grievance Redressal Committee (GRC).

Core Functions of the SEDGs Cell

The Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) Cell undertakes several key functions to effectively integrate and support students within the institution:

  • Coordination & Scholarships: To collaborate with statutory bodies such as the SC/ST Cell and Equal Opportunity Cell to facilitate access to government scholarships, fellowships, and related benefits.
  • Academic Support: To implement bridge courses, orientation programs, and remedial coaching to address academic gaps and support student progression.
  • Financial & Skill Development: To promote “Earn-while-Learn” initiatives and organize workshops focused on personality development, professional competencies, and soft skills to enhance employability.
  • Single Window Support: To function as a centralized support system addressing student needs, services, facilities, and welfare measures.
  • Sensitization: To conduct awareness and sensitization programs for faculty, staff, counsellors, and students, fostering an inclusive and empathetic institutional culture.
  • Zero-Tolerance Policy: To educate students during induction and counselling sessions about the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination.
